How to Survive as a Christian on a Liberal College Campus

One of these things is not like the other. That could have been the theme song that sums up my college years. I know how it feels to be an outsider. Everyone around you seems to be drinking, clubbing, and partying. And here you are the Christian girl holding to her morals who has no desire to engage in the type of "fun" everyone else seems to be a part of. So how do you survive? After all you are stuck there for four years. Four years that seem like an eternity but you will survive. That's your theme song.

The key to my survival was community. Christian community. Get plugged in. You may feel alone but trust me there are some other Christians on your campus.

From the start of my first year in college I found a Christian church that I would consistently attend every single sunday. What if you don't have a car? Neither did I but there is a solution to your problem! You can carpool with some of the other Christians on your campus and offer them some gas money to show your gratitude. Also many churches have church vans and shuttle buses that pick up at local colleges.  If they aren't currently picking up anyone at your campus that may be because up until this point no one had expressed interest. However, if you reach out to them via email or phone they will most likely be more than willing to make a stop by your campus.

Are you apart of any Christian organizations on your campus? You should be. Find a christian organization on campus. Usually all campus organizations can be found on your colleges website if it's updated often. If not stop by the student activities center and speak with someone from the campus life office. All organizations have to be approved through their office anyway so they most likely will be able to help you out. Once you find out the names of the organizations attend one of their meetings to see if it's a good fit for you. If not you can always do what I did and start your own organization on campus.

I'd also like to mention that while it's important to surround yourself with a strong christian community don't exclude yourself from others. Although I spent most of my time around like-minded indiviuals I still found it important to interact with those who were different than myself. After all how can you make disciples [matthew 28:18-20] if you never socialize with those who aren't christian?

So let's recap. Find christian community on your campus. Join a church and join christian based organizations on campus. At the same token, still get to know those who don't share your beliefs so once you have built a relationship with them you can eventually share Christ with them. Not only will you survive but you will thrive.

What do you [or did you] do to find christian community on your liberal college campus?
