More Than a Helpmeet!

What is the role of a wife?  Most would say - To be a suitable helper, helpmeet, helpmate, whatever you call it - to basically help your husband with his vision and purpose.  One day I started to wonder but is that all?  I mean sure that's a large task and an honor to be someone's helpmeet however what about the womans dream and visions.  Women get visions too.  Women have a purpose too.  Are they just to lay that to the side because they are supposed to be a helpmeet?  I was really confused and conflicted about this. The reason being is because I know I want to be married and I know I want to help my future husband with his vision in purpose.  In fact I can't wait.  But then I also know that I have gifts, talents, dreams, and visions that have been given too me by God.  What happens with all those gifts, talents, dreams, and visions once I get married?

Therefore, during my quiet time I sought out an answer to that question.  I was directed to Proverbs 31.  Let's see what the "wife of noble character" did.  So as I'm reading I see that verse 12 says, "she brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life." In my opinion here the "helpmeet" role has been addressed.  Okay great. The proverbs 31 wife helps her husband.  What else?  I continued to read and what I saw was that she was a manufacturer, importer, manager, realtor, farmer, seamstress, upholsterer, and merchant.

vs. 16: she is more than a housewife. In fact she's out making her own money - "she considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard"

vs. 18: she has a strong work ethic. While other people are resting she's up busy about her business - "her lamp does not go out at night"

vs. 20: she is heavily involved in community service. She helps others and does volunteer work - "she opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy."

vs. 22, 24: she is into fashion. She makes clothes and sells them. - "she makes coverings for her bed.....she makes linen garments and sells them"

vs. 27: she protects her home and she is not at all lazy. - "she watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness."

So what is the role of a wife? To be a helpmeet? Yes, but clearly it goes further than that. A wife is busy about doing kingdom business. Part of her kingdom business is to serve her husband. But also there's more.  My initial question was when married what do I do with my talents, gifts, dream, and visions given to me by God?  After looking at the life of the Proverbs 31 wife I think the answer to the question has now become crystal clear.  I serve as a helpmeet to my husband but I also continue to pursue the other assignments God has given to me as well.  Being a helpmeet is truly an honor but know that we are more than a helpmeet.  Don't let your dreams and visions die. The show doesn't stop just because you change your last name.  God has given you an assignment too so get busy & stay busy.
