Your Relationship....with God

This blog is going to be quick.  Lately I've been trying to figure out how to do this whole personal relationship with God situation.  Ever since 2012 when I found out about Pinky Promise Movement I have begun to understand the importance of your own personal relationship with God.  However, I've been battling with what does this look like for me.

You can read blogs, on blogs, on blogs about how to have a personal relationship with God and what you need to do.  I've read Heather Lindsey's blogs and I've listened to her sermons about her personal relationship with God.  Basically one thing she would do is have date nights with Jesus and she would get dressed up and go out to eat and read her Bible.  That's good and all but that's just not me.  In fact that's not most people.  If it is you and it works for you glory be unto God but all I'm saying is it did not work for me.  And recently, I've expressed this same feeling to God when talking to Him.

I was kind of like uhhh Lord I don't want to get dressed up and go on date nights with you.  And basically The Lord was like I'm not asking you to do that.  YOUR personal relationship with me is YOUR personal relationship with me not Heather Lindsey's.
And I was like hmmm you're right God thanks.  I don't think it really matters what your personal relationship with God looks like but you do need to have one.  Don't compare your relationship with God with someone else's relationship with God.  We are all different people.  Your relationship with your mom is different than your relationship with your dad, brother, cousin, sister, aunt, uncle & etc... Therefore, your relationship with your mom is not going to look like your best friends relationship with their mom.  And just because it's different doesn't mean one is better or stronger than another.

What I've learned is that you should not try to be modeling YOUR personal relationship with God after someone else's relationship with God. Once I understood that I was free to actually enjoy my quiet time with God because I wasn't trying to force something that was unnatural.  I get in a quiet place I talk & pray to God He talks back to me and leads me to certain scripture & I learn some things and that's a wrap. Of course throughout the day you should continue to talk with God and meditate on His word.  Also don't get trapped up in trying to supplement your quiet time/relationship with God with other things such as listening to sermons, watching Christian YouTube videos, or going to church.  These EXTRA things that you are doing do not substitute for communicating with God one on one. Just you and Him together.

The most important thing I've learned is to be open & honest with God when you spend time with Him.  Even if you aren't saying it with your mouth God knows your thoughts even before they come to your mind. So if you can't stand that relative let God know.  If you're tired of waiting for "the one" let God know.  If you really hate your job let God know.  Transparency is key in any relationship.   However, brace yourself for what God might say to you in return. He might say my first and greatest commandment is to love one another so you need to love that relative.  He might say you may be tired of waiting but you aren't finished being prepared yet. He might say there's many people who would die for your job where is your attitude of thankfulness. Just as you keep it real with God best believe He's going to keep it real with you.  Now it's time to figure out what works for you?  If you're still lost ask God to help you build a relationship with Him.  He'll help you.   A solid relationship with God is the most important thing you can have.  Happy Holidays!
