Blessed to be a Blessing

We are selfish creatures by nature.  Like crabs in a bucket.  You have to push everyone else down so you can continue to stay at the top.  I’ve never understood this mentality.  Why don’t people like helping other people?  It makes no sense to me whatsoever.  However, many people are this way and it is very rare that I come across those who are willing to reach out a helping hand to those in need.

This should not be the case.  Scripture says that we are blessed to be a blessing.  I’m not making this up it’s right here in Genesis 12:2, “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” Yet for some reason a large majority of people including Christians feel the need to be selfish.  Maybe you’ve been blessed with an excellent job and your friend is currently unemployed and you know of some positions in your company that have just become open and their resume perfectly meets the job requirements yet you don’t even bother to mention it to your friend. But why not? Wouldn’t you expect your friend to do the same for you? God has blessed you with this amazing opportunity but for whatever reason you don’t want to lend a helping hand to your friend.

Maybe it’s not a job for you but it’s something.  God has blessed you with something in your life.  It is your duty as a Christian to be a blessing to others.  God doesn’t bless you so you can hold onto your blessing with a tight grip warning everyone else to stay back. Instead He wants you to bless others just as He has blessed you. God’s blessings are not just for you, they are for everyone around you as well.  You should look for ways you can help others. One day you’re going to need a helping hand.  Scripture says that you will reap what you sow (Galatians 6:7).

As I encourage you to pour your blessings out on others I am striving to do the same.  Helping others is what I am called to do.  It is the reason that God wakes me up every morning.  In fact after I graduate college this May 2013 I will be joining the Teach for America (TFA) Corps.  All throughout my time of applying I was contacting people I know who were in the corps and professors at my college and reaching out to them for advice and guidance.  They could have easily dismissed me and told me they didn’t have the time to help me but not one of them said that to me.  Not all of them are Christians either.  Each one took time out of their busy schedules to help me.  Did they have to do that? No, of course not. But they did.  And when I found out I was accepted immediately I knew that I was going to bless others by lending a helping hand to others I knew who were applying to the TFA corps. In hopes that I could help them successfully be extended an offer to join the corps. Why? Because I’m blessed to be a blessing.  It’s only right that I do that. Part of my reason for joining the corps is because I believe that every child should have access to a quality education.  I received a quality education. It’s only right that I turn it around and help others receive the same educational opportunities I did.

Let God use you for His glory. Always remember that you are blessed to be a blessing.

Ponder on these questions:

1.) Do I know someone in need & what are they in need of? Can I help them in any way or know someone who could help them.

2.) How can I use the blessings God has given me to bless others?
