Your Passion, Purpose, and God’s Will

What is my passion and purpose?  What is God’s will for my life? What does He want me to do? I’m sure you’ve asked yourself these question time and time again.  At least I know I did especially while I was in college trying to find a major that led me to a career that was supposed to be my purpose in life.  To me my purpose was whatever job I would end up having after graduation.  So I had to find my passion so that I knew what job I would want to have. So I began to write down what I thought was my passion.  I got books that I thought would help me unleash my purpose.  I prayed and prayed and prayed yet never got an answer.  All while doing so graduation was coming quicker and quicker but I had not discovered my purpose.  God had not yet revealed to me His will for my life or so I had thought.  God was moving too slow for me doesn’t He know that I need a job after graduation? It’s fall semester senior year and I’m still confused.  Of course I tried to jump ahead of God searching for jobs researching grad school programs on my own.  Nothing seemed interesting to me. As usual I was lost and confused.  During this time

I was also strengthening my relationship with Christ by reading the Bible each morning and using my journal.  Then I began to see scriptures like the following:

1 Thessalonians 4:3-8 “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body…”

1Thessalonians 5:16-17 “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for your in Christ Jesus.”

Ephesians 5:17 “Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.”

John 6:38 “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.”

Hebrews 13:20-21 “May the God of peace ... equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

It is through these scriptures that it dawned on me God’s will for your life is more than a job. God’s will for your life is that you bring His name glory through your thoughts and actions.  It is that you live wholeheartedly for Him. It is that you please God in all that you do.  That is God’s will for your life.  Once you understand that it becomes your passion and purpose just like the Apostle Paul.  His passion was for Christ and his purpose was to bring others to Christ.  If we truly call ourselves a Christian shouldn’t that be our passion and purpose as well?  It’s certainly God’s will.  Matthew 28:19-20 says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything, I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.”  You can have passion for others things maybe you like to bake well great!  If that’s what you’re truly passionate about go to God and ask Him how can you use this gift He has given you to bring others to Christ? Bringing others to Christ must be our ultimate goal. Maybe through everything you bake you include a scripture attached to it.  I don’t know but everything you do should be for the soul focus of bringing glory to God.  Making more disciples as the above verse in Matthew stated.

Passion is what is driving and leading you.  When I looked up the word passion in Webster’s dictionary the first thing it said was” the sufferings of Christ between the night of the Last Supper and his death.” Interesting huh? Another definition was “intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction.” It also said, “A strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept.  When I looked up the word purpose it said, “Something set up as an object or end to be attained.”  Did you know you can actually find purpose in a place you don’t want to be in or a job you don’t like?  For example, I did not like the college I attended.  Each year I contemplated transferring but never did.  I guess I was there for a reason.  And I was therefore a reason.  Those four years was a season of growth from me.  I encountered diversity in every way possible.  And most importantly God wanted to use me at that college to make His name known.  The summer before my senior year I found out about an organization called Pinky Promise ( which is dedicated to uplifting and encouraging women to honor God with their lives and bodies.  Through my time I spent that summer developing a relationship with Christ knowing Him, telling others about Him became my passion and He used that passion for a purpose.  The purpose of establishing a chapter of Pinky Promise on my campus and being able to encourage other women to live for Christ.  Now never in a million years – even though I had always been Christian – I think I would be apart of an organization like this. Less known start one, but I did.  I found purpose in a college I didn’t like from my passion.  And you can bet that I was also fulfilling His will.

The Bible is our blueprint for existing.  If you don’t know why you’re on earth I ask you are you reading the word? Are you spending time with God daily?  I’m not talking about a quick “Jesus Wept” before you eat a meal or the Lord’s prayer before go to bed at night.  That’s not enough.  You’re seeking Google job searches, books, blogs, and people to help you discover your passion and purpose when you should be going to the one who created you for the purpose you’re trying to discover.  I can say this because I’ve been there done that.  Scripture says in Proverbs 19:20, “Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.” How are we going to know our purpose and passion if we don’t seek advice and instruction from the one who created us? God wants to tell you your purpose.  For crying out loud it’s the reason he created you.  But you never asked Him.  Doesn’t scripture say, in Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Ask Him today eliminate the distractions.  It’s not going to come overnight he’s got to develop you in some areas first.  And please once He tells you don’t try to jump the gun and figure out how you’re going to make you’re purpose happen.  Don’t try to perfect in the flesh was started in the spirit.  Have patience, rest, and wait.  His timing is perfect.

Last thing I want to say is if you have a passion and God is not in the midst of it then it’s not you’re purpose.  Just look at entertainers.  Music Artists are quick to thank God during their award acceptance speech or throw Him in a lyric or verse of a song about look at all my flashy things.  It’s okay for their passion to be music and their purpose to be a singer but if it’s not glorify God than what’s the point?  God made us and He gave us a purpose.  His purpose wouldn’t be for us to praise the things of this world and gloat in worldly desires and desires of the flesh.  Read all of 1 Thessalonians 5: 3-8 and you will see that this is true. Jeremy Lin’s passion/purpose is to play basketball ball but don’t you know that He uses that gift God has given Him to glorify His creator?  And that fact that it glorifies His creator lines up with the will of God.  Same with Tim Tebow.  But for Nicki Minaj and the rest of them I can’t say the same.  Who am I to judge? God knows their hearts but God is barely if at all reflected in their music.  Nicki Minaj, she’s talented no doubt – as I use to listen to her music before I gave it up – but she’s not using her gift in the right way.  She fears that if she goes the Christian route she’ll make no money.  But scripture says, in Proverbs 23:4-5, “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint.  Cast but a glance at riches and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like and eagle.”  So clearly her motive is all wrong.  When you’re living in the Lord’s will He will provide more than enough for you.  Don’t get caught up in making money that you can’t fulfill the Lord’s will because you’re afraid that His purpose won’t sustain the selfish lifestyle you desire because you want mans approval.  Ask yourself this question, are you using your gifts to glorify God or your flesh and the things of this world?  If you don’t know go to God ask Him to show you your heart.  He will.  It’s up to you to listen and to make the change.  God bless you.

“Many are the plans in a man’s heart but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” - Proverbs 19:21
